The Martlets

About the Martlets http://www.themartlets.org.uk/ The Martlets

Situated in Hove, the Martlets provides care to patients, their families and carers in an area that includes Portslade, Brighton, Hove, along the coast to Newhaven, inland to Lewes, Ringmer and Newick and back along the line of the Downs.

Purpose-built and opened in 1997*, the Martlets Hospice provides expert and compassionate care, which enhances the quality of life and eases the distress of patients suffering from cancer and other serious conditions. Care is tailored to the needs of individual patients.

Care is provided via an 18-bedded in-patient unit; a day hospice for 15 patients; bereavement support and counselling and a home care service operating as Martlets @ Home.

The Hospice is the base of the Macmillan Community Team(MCT).

Hospice staff provide education and training in palliative care for professionals working in other settings such as nursing homes.
Access to the Hospice is through medical referral from GPs, District Nurses, the MCT, Hospital Macmillan Nurses or Hospital Consultant.

Hospice care and services are provided to patients free of charge.
It is medical grounds which govern admissions, but as a charity, donations from patients, family and friends will help secure the future of the Hospice for others. The Martlets is not part of the NHS. Of the £2.5 million now required to run the Hospice, over £2 million must be raised from charitable activities within the local community.

*The Martlets Hospice came about from the merger of the Coppercliff Hospice and Tarner Home, both of which are now closed.
