About Us

Music for Life was initially conceived to honour a very close friend of all involved, Dave Room, who sadly lost his fight for life in 2002. Dave was a well-known and respected sound engineer who worked at many Brighton venues for over 20 years. The care he received whilst in The Martlets was truly expert and compassionate, and our collective and ongoing wish is to help ensure that others can continue to benefit from the caring and peaceful environment the hospice provides at such a difficult time of life.

Dave’s partner, Barbara Uren and a good friend, Martin May, were the co-founders of Music for Life and the first event was held at Concorde 2 on 21st July 2002. Very sadly, Martin died on 30th March 2009, also of cancer. He was an excellent local musician and played with many bands, including The Moondogs, The Lone Sharks and The House Doctors. Martin’s partner, Sue Lapwood, along with Barbara, has carried on organising Music for Life events, to ensure the memory of Dave and Martin lives on and, of course, to raise as much money as possible for a cause close to all our hearts.
